Good. You had the courage to click that link and begin your journey through the looking glass. We’ll find out soon enough what exactly resonated with you that gave you the confidence to come this far. And hopefully we’ll give you enough confidence to continue your investigation. Let us begin by saying a few things you already know so you can gain confidence that we know it too.

You already know that in the real world of business (and life), things either get better because someone finds the courage to get the help they need to make things better or no one finds the courage, no one gets any help, and things generally get worse.

Whether or not you’ve ever consciously considered it, you already know this is the premise behind every conversation you have with a potential new client. Either the client decides to engage the services of your law firm to help them create a better future or they don’t get any help and things get worse.

Founder, CORPLaw

Before starting at How to Manage, I felt...I think the right word is...shame! Ashamed I wasn’t doing whatever it is I needed to do...wasn’t working hard enough, [but] I was working hard.

Ive grown my business by 600 percent. We are a team of seven now. Before I was a team of just me working really, really hard. I wish I would have joined sooner. I would have spent less time spinning my wheels, and I would have gotten the advice that I needed. What was holding me back was fear. I wish I would have been braver sooner because it was absolutely worth it.

Nathan Riordan

Wenokur Riordan PLLC, Seattle, WA

“HTM, to me, was sort of like getting an applied MBA in how to run my own business: setting goals, measuring, and coming back. The other thing that I got out of and continue to get out of HTM is a lot of the mindset work that’s done—thinking about what your own blocks are, what your own fears are, and what is standing in the way. In this group, not just in the coaches and the team but with the other lawyers that come here, I gained so many benefits just from showing up, especially these LQMs (Live Quarterly Meetings). That association with just the peers has been transformational in and of itself.”

Jeremy Hugus

The Platte River Law Firm, Casper, WY

“That’s the ultimate goal: to have a successful business being good at what you do. You benefit from that but so do hundreds and thousands of other people that you get to help.

There are defining moments in a person’s life, and one of those moments for me is when I chose to join How to Manage a Small Law Firm. It’s a wild, fun ride. I love it. It’s been the best thing I ever could have done for my business.”

Ronald Pollack

Fighting For People Injury Law, Philadelphia, PA

“You do a lot of learning about mindset, understanding yourself, and what is holding you back personally. So professionally, financially, and personally, I’ve grown as a human being, and that allows me to add more value to my clients and to basically be better for them. If I’m better for them, then I’m helping lives.”

Alfredo Lozano

The Lozano Law Firm, San Antonio, TX

“When we first joined, I think the biggest myth was ‘We’re different. We practice immigration law. What they’re teaching us really doesn’t apply to us—maybe for other types of law.’ That was the biggest one, and at the end of the day, we found out that, no, what we’re learning is how to create a successful business.”

Liisa Speaker

Speaker Law Firm, Lansing, MI

“My firm had been just growing by dribs and drabs, and I wanted to have more profit from my business so I could do more for my family. When I started, I was $340,000, and now I’m at $665,000, which is close to double what I did two years ago.

When I joined, I thought having a $1,000,000 firm was completely ridiculous. ‘That’s not possible for me to have a $1,000,000 firm.’ And now my goal is to have a $1.2 million firm.”

The same premise applies to you, and we know you are here because you are a highly educated person who has the courage to ask for help. We know you want to have a better future, and we know that you know “the status quo” is nothing more than a legal fiction. It’s a construct people use to try to make sense of things when everything feels like it’s happening too fast. But it’s not a strategy for long-term success. That’s because “maintaining the status quo” is a practical impossibility. While the owners of so many struggling law firms are running around talking about maintaining the status quo, the rest of the world keeps on turning without them.

So now you have a choice to make.

Either the decisions you make and the actions you take with regard to how you manage the business of your law firm are going to cause it to get better and give you a better life or the decisions and the excuses you make are going to allow your law firm to get worse. Up or down. Forward or back. In or out. This is how the world works. You already know all of this, don’t you?

Well, here is something we know from decades of experience working with some of the fastest-growing, most profitable, and most fun-to-run solo and small law firms. We know that the owners of the most successful law firms generally aren’t any better-looking, faster, taller, or smarter than the lawyers that own struggling law firms.

The owners of the most successful law firms didn’t necessarily go to better law schools. They aren’t usually working harder. And most of them don’t even claim that the success of their business has anything to do with whether or not they’re a better lawyer than anyone else.

We know that notwithstanding all the b.s. that so many struggling law firm owners like to say, the difference between the struggling law firms and the most successful law firms has nothing to do with practice area, geographic area, or anything else external that can be used as a convenient excuse.

The main thing that distinguishes the owners of the most successful law firms from the owners of the many struggling law firms out there is that the owners of the most successful law firms act in accordance with these three facts of life:

  1. The practice of law is a profession. The business of a law firm is a business. If you want to have a better business, you have to manage the business of your law firm.
  2. There are only 7 main parts of every successful law firm. They are the same seven main parts. This means you have every one of the same opportunities to get the help you need to learn how to manage the seven main parts of your law firm as the owners of the most successful law firms do.
  3. Actions produce results; excuses don’t. And it’s actually easier to build and sustain a successful law firm when you follow your own advice.

What advice do you give your own clients every day?

There’s a big difference between the owners of some of the most successful and fastest-growing small law firms versus the owners of law firms that are usually struggling:

Are you ready to follow your own advice and consider hiring the very best team of small law firm management professionals that has ever existed to help you learn how to manage the

7 Main Parts of your law firm’s business?

WHAT LIFE WITH

HOW TO MANAGE A SMALL LAW FIRM

IS LIKE

First of all, the owners of the law firms we help to manage prefer to be referred to as “members,” not just clients. That’s because being a member of this unique community is about so much more than just the mechanics of how you will plan, grow, and manage the business of your law firm.

It’s also about preparing for and growing into the person you will become when your law firm gives you the financial resources, freedom of time, and confidence to become the best version of yourself.

Unless, of course, you think that it makes no difference if a parent, spouse, significant other, marketer, employer, or lawyer advising clients feels lifted up and supported by their business or dragged down by how it runs on a day-to-day basis. We think you know that how the business of your law firm runs affects and has an impact on every other part of your life.

So imagine what it would be like to surround yourself with hundreds of some of the most successful solo and small law firm owners in the world…to immerse yourself in a group of like-minded entrepreneurs who believe that law firms should be run like a business and who have seen the benefits firsthand because they’re living it. Our members empower, encourage, and support each other at our exclusive Live Quarterly Meetings, in smaller live group settings, online in our private Facebook group, and in so many other meaningful ways that you just have to experience to understand how much you are missing out on.

Who Is Not a Fit For Us

Our “No Assholes“ Policy

To protect the important work we do and provide a safe place for all our like-minded members to discuss, their business, we have strict policies for the types of people we will and won’t work with.

We have a grading scale we use to define an “A” client/member.

These are the sort of people we love to work with—the sort of people who inspire me and my team to go above and beyond on a regular basis.

We also have our idea of what’s an “F” client/member. These are the sort of people that the “A” clients/members don’t want to be around, and neither do we!

So here’s what it means to be an “A” client/member in my business (in no particular order):

These are the positive attributes we look for in people we choose to do business with as members, vendors, or part of our team. Assholes are people whose conduct is the opposite of what we described above.

Sound like you can embody most of the traits we’re looking for? Then we’d love to have you join How to Manage a Small Law Firm and help you grow your law firm to create the life you want!
