JOB DESCRIPTION

You’ve “been there, done that” with hands-on law firm management, commuting to a law firm every day; often knowing much more about the “business side” of the law firm than the lawyers who employed you. You’ve paid your dues with 50 and 60 hour weeks. And you’ve been frustrated by the disconnect between value delivered, and your compensation.

Now, you are ready to make use of all of your experience, creativity and know-how to help appreciative lawyers and their staff, get better results and improve their lives and let your results speak for themselves.

This is a full time salaried position with impressive bonus opportunities, health insurance, 401K and other benefits.  This is not a sales job.  It’s a coaching, consulting and advisory position for experienced legal administrators and hands-on law office managers.  As part of the application process you should be prepared to demonstrate your practical understanding of what makes a law firm “tick” and be able to give credible evidence that you are a person who is capable of helping another human being to do what they probably don’t want to do, in order to accomplish what they really do want to accomplish.

Your job is to help our client-members get results, using our proprietary and proven curriculum which we will train you on.  You will then guide, direct, teach, coach, cajole, encourage, hold our client-members accountable and generally support them through the month-to-month management of their law firms, documenting progress and problem-solving with them along the way.

The Law Practice Management Coach travels quarterly to attend and participate in live meetings held around the Country, attends monthly team meetings by telephone but primarily works with your assigned client-members from your own home office via telephone, email, web meeting, etc.

Our client-members are almost exclusively owners of solo and small law firms who are enrolled in one or more of our ongoing monthly retainer, curriculum-based and topical coaching programs.

YOU MUST HAVE HAD PREVIOUS HANDS-ON SMALL LAW FIRM MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE.   PLEASE DON’T APPLY TO THIS POSITION IF YOU HAVEN’T RUN A LAW FIRM BEFORE.

By “small law firm” we mean, with revenues ranging between $0 (start up) to less than $5MM. If you have never worked in a firm like this and helped the owners to grow their business this is not the job for you.  Big ideas are great.  And there’s definitely a time and a place for big picture thinking when you’re working with our client-members.  But you also have to be ready, willing and able to shift your attention (and help our clients refocus their attention) to the immediate here & now realities of cash flow, calendaring and being sure their business doesn’t go off a cliff while their head rests comfortably up on a cloud.

Your job is to help our client-members get results.  To do this you will guide, direct, teach, coach, cajole, encourage, hold them accountable and generally support our members in their matriculation through our program, documenting and problem-solving with them along the way.

You will coordinate with the rest of our team who are assigned to each client assigned to you.  You will share resources from our library and from your own years of real-world small firm management & growth experience.  You will measure assigned-member-progress and hold assigned members accountable for taking positive actions in the direction of their stated goals.  Your compensation will be positively-affected by the success of our client-members assigned to you.

Your compensation will also be positively-affected by your willingness and ability to think outside the box (we hate that cliché too but it fits) and effectively communicate any potential problems or opportunities to your lead coach in-time for corrective action to help the member(s).

Members of our various small law firm management, marketing & sales coaching programs are almost exclusively owners of single-shareholder small law firms with few support staff, poorly-documented policies & procedures and little experience implementing “e-myth” type of best practices in their law firms.

We help them with management, marketing & sales issues they struggle with since most lawyers never learned squat about these subjects in law school.  If you are the right candidate you’re whooping & hollerin’ just about now.  If you’re not really excited about the possibility of earning six figures, while working mostly from home and helping lawyers with these sort of practical real world issues, then this is probably not the right position for you.

We also help our client-members overcome a lot of their own mindset issues that hold them back.  If you’ve ever read “Think & Grow Rich” or other books like that and WISHED you could get the lawyers you worked for to take those concepts seriously (and while we’re at it, look at a budget!) then you may be just who we’re looking for to join our team.

Some of the stated goals of our coaching program which it will be your job to support, are to help our client-members increase their revenues, profitability, reduce their average number of hours in the office and convert their law firm from being a job and into an actual business that can function without their physical presence on a day-to-day basis.

This may include investing your own time to learn and become and remain familiar with our program content, curriculum, resources and unique but proven approaches to solo and small law firm management and growth.  What we teach our client-members is highly-ethical, professional and highly profitable; but it often runs contrary to “conventional wisdom”.

Part of your job description is also to be patient with our growing pains.  This can be the best job you ever had or the most frustrating depending on your flexibility, team-spirit, commitment to our client-members and your realistic expectations about what it’s like to work in a fast-paced growing business.

The position will be expected to carry a coaching load of up to 60 attorneys who each receive “about” an hour of individual scheduled coaching per month.  In some cases an additional coaching call monthly may be needed if in your judgment that’s what it’s going to take to help the client-member get the sort of positive results that you want to be associated with.  Your income will be positively-affected by client-member retention.  Retention is typically based on results.  Which means your income (as well as ours) is very much tied to helping our client-members achieve (and appreciate that they are achieving) their stated goals.

We emphasize this point because we want you to know up front that How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm, is a highly entrepreneurial firm where results count more than effort.  If you are the kind of results-oriented person we’re looking for this is like music to your ears.

Additionally, individual emergency laser coaching calls (usually 15 minutes or less) as needed should the client-member experience emergencies, respond to unlimited emails from your assigned members and respond to postings on the discussion board from all program members as appropriate.  Finally, attend quarterly live weekend seminars in selected cities 2 to 4 times per year (we’ll cover your costs).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individual scheduled coaching to your assigned members a minimum of one hour per month
  • Respond to phone calls from members in less than 24 hours M-F
  • Respond to emails from members in less than 24 hours M-F
  • Review M-F and post to the member discussion board as appropriate
  • Participate in training and development calls as scheduled to improve you skill set, share your skill set and be able to deliver the same message to the member base as intended in the company curriculum
  • Keep notes on your coaching contacts with our members
  • Lead/facilitate/participate in group conference calls/webinars as requested from time to time in areas you have particular expertise
  • Provide reports on progress of your assigned members as requested
  • Make available coaching times for members that will include some after 5pm time slots to accommodate member needs especially members in different time zones.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Most importantly you should have practical, hands-on experience with the start-up, management and growth of a small law firm.  Small law firm means revenues ranging between $0 (start up) to less than $5MM.
  • Competence in the Management Categories of writing skills, communication skills, self-management skills, information technology and organizational development that are required for the Certified Legal Manager
  • A working understanding and willingness to develop in the “Core Competencies” of coaching that can be viewed at the two sites below:

  • At least a basic knowledge and some experience in law firm marketing preferred, with a willingness to learn in depth about this aspect of law practice management.
  • You must be interested in personal development.  Because that’s a big part of what’s been holding our members back.  The inner game.

EXPERIENCE:

We are less concerned with how many years of small law firm management experience you have than we are with how many experiences you have gained and mastered during those years.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Problem solving, listening skills, alignment with core philosophy, detail oriented, systematic, creative, good-natured, emotionally-secure, patient, optimistic, flexible, knows when to lead and when to follow.  These are all adjectives and terms that describe our ideal candidate.

COMPENSATION:

TARGET COMPENSATION: $130,000 + benefits

TOTAL TRANSPARENCY:

PAID TRAINING ALLOWANCE: $5,000 per month.

Your training will be largely self-directed with weekly calls with your trainer and periodic performance evaluations.  Training is designed to be about 40 hours/week.  Training is designed to be 6-8 weeks.

RAMP-UP:  $6,000 per month. We’re not just going to assign a full case load to you right away.  That would be bad for you, bad for us and bad for our members.  So you’ll earn about $6,000 per month as we let you ease into things for 2-3 more months

FULL LOAD: After Training and Ramp Up you’ll get a full case load which should give you the opportunity to earn $100,000/year, and more with performance bonuses.
